Lightroom to Photoshop: A Round Trip

In Lightroom, it is easy to send an image file to Photoshop for some finishing touches and have it return to Lightroom. This makes it easy to manage all of one's images in the Lightroom catalog. I am often surprised how some of my students get all confused in the process.

Here are a couple of points to remember:

  • to return to Lightroom after Photoshop adjustments, simply Save the image; DO NOT Save As. Saving As results in Lightroom losing track of the image file. After a simple Save and Closing the file, it will return to Lightroom without any problem.
  • image files with layers added in Photoshop can be saved back to Lightroom. Remember, if you wish to reopen the layered file in Photoshop, open the Original file not a copy. Opening a copy results in a flattened copy being opened in Photoshop.
There is a bridge from Lightroom to Photoshop, and you won't pay a toll if you pay attention to what you are doing.

BTW, the bridge in the photo is the Brooklyn Bridge.
