Le Conte Glacier

The Le Conte Glacier was our destination this morning. It is the fastest calving glacier in North America. When it calves, it drops ice bergs into the bay in front of it which runs into the Wrangle Narrows.
A piece of ice must be 5 meters high to be an iceberg.

About 90% of the iceberg is under the surface of the water.

It is very common to see large birds on the icebergs. This one is a juvenile Bald Eagle.
More ice bergs.

We moved among the ice bergs via Zodiac.

This one broke apart 15 minutes after I took this photo.
The ice can be very blue due to the fact that it has very little air in it.

A piece of ice berg ice; it is very clear due to the pressure when it was formed.

Back to our ship.

The end for today.
