The Fresvik Incident
We took a quick trip to Fresvik, which is east of Vik, in order to see the ancestral home land of Jay's friend Ron Halse. Fresvik is a town of less than 100 people (unofficial estimate). Jay had the name of one of Ron's relatives who had been a school principal and spoke English. Fresvik's commercial and social center appeared to be the town grocery store. There wasn't much other than the grocery store. The road does not extend east of the store. Jay decided to ask if anyone knew Ron's relative. After several minutes in the store, Jay emerged saying that he thought a man he met in the store was going to lead us to the house of Ron's relative. Jay wasn't absolutely sure as he could not find anyone who spoke even the most rudimentary English. Well, it was Norway. We didn't speak any Norwegian. I guess we'll record it as a draw on the verbal communication scoreboard. We were led to a house. No one was home, but Jay left a note. I guess we will always wonder who was on the receiving end of the greeting.
There are still a significant number of houses and utility buildings with sod roofs all over Norway (including Fresvik)
