Day #12 Dunedin

Today was a day to explore Dunedin in a small group, just 3 of us. Our guide, Ross, Picked us up at 10 AM and we drove out to the Otago Peninsula.

First was a tour of Larnach Castle. It's not really a castle, but the owner wanted it to be his castle. William Larnach was a rags to riches story, building a fortune, losing a fortune and then suicide.

After the "castle" we took a wildlife cruise. We saw an Albatros nesting site and some sea birds. We saw a few soaring around.

Finally, we went to a Yellow Eyed Penguin rescue and rehab center. One interesting point was that there was a Rock Hopper Penguin in the rehap area. Rock Hoppers are only found in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). That's about 8, 500 km. How did he get to New Zealand?

On the return trip, Ross dropped Randeen at a beachside saltwater pool for a swim. When alone with Ross, we engaged in some discussion about USA politics. I'm not revealing the details of the conversation. It is much the same as other conversations with locals.

We enjoyed a Japanese meal to end our day's exploits.
Tomorrow we head down the coast to Invercargill.
