Day #32 Hobart, Tasmania

So, we boarded a plane in Brisbane and headed to Tassie, as most Australians refer to Tasmania. Australians seem to have a proclivity for shortening names and adding "y" or "ie" to the shortened form. Examples include Tasmania/Tassie, Woolworths (a local grocery chain)/Woolies and Brisbane/Brissie. Maybe I'll think of or learn more later.

Hobart is home to a world famous art museum, MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). More about MONA later.

We are staying in Hobart the capital of the state of Tasmania (Tassie). Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia following only Sydney. It was a significant penal colony. Between 1804 and 1853, more than 70,000 convicts were forcibly transported to Tasmania and set to work building, mining, and farming for the state and private landowners.

After checking into our lodgings, we took a brief stroll around Hobart.

We bought some provisions for breakfasts and the went to templo, a 25 seat neighborhood restaurant in Hobart. It's a fixed menu place with a six course seasonal menu. It was very okay. Actually, much better than okay. The seating is communal which lead to some good table conversation. Our closest table mates were two young doctors from Belfast (a couple), a guy from Brooklyn and his friend from Melbourne. Good stuff.

Tomorrow, we catch the ferry to MONA at 9:15, dine at The Source (at MONA) and return to Hobart at 5PM.
