Day #42 Port Fairy to Robe

Yesterday, we officially left The Great Ocean Road, but we continued along the coast from Port Fairy to Robe. The weather turned a bit cooler, but we still stopped at a few coastal wonders. The Petrified Forrest (actually, a faux petrified forrest) and the Blow Holes. The Petrified Forrest was mis-identified as petrified trees by early discoverers. They are limestone columns that have had their interiors eroded by water. The Blow Holes are a number of coastal rock formations attacked by crashing waves. No holes, but mesmerizing.

We purchased a couple of sandwiches at Coles (a major grocery chain). That was lunch. We drove for a couple more hours and arrived at Robe (pronounced like the robe in bathrobe). We checked out potential dinner spots and decided to return to the Black Swan a bit later. A little breakfast shopping at Foodtown and then it was a hike to see the Obelisk. The Robe Obelisk was constructed by local builder George Shivas in 1855. The Obelisk was used to create a landmark to navigate the entrance into Guichen Bay and to store rocket fired lifesaving equipment for ships that crashed into the reefs. Many ships crashed on the reefs of south Australia.

Dinner at the Black Swan was really good. It is kind of a pub cafe.
