Day #45 Kangaroo Island

WiFi, again!
We were advised that Kangaroo Island was a “must do”. So, with only one day remaining in our Adelaide visit, we booked a 1-day tour to that fabled island. This was not an easy decision as we had to be at the bus station at 6:15 AM and would not return until after 10:30 PM. This is a big ask.
We were at the bus station as required and climbed aboard the SeaLand bus headed to the ferry at Port Jarvis. This is basically the only way to get to Kangaroo Island. The 2-hour ride delivered us to the ferry with adequate time to purchase a flat white (of late my preferred coffee choice). The 45-minute ferry ride delivered us to a second SeaLand bus at approximately 10 AM. We had a short visit (about 30 minutes) at a sea lion conservation area. An okay visit unless one has visited the Galapagos Islands (sorry for the brag). Then back on the bus to go to lunch at about 12:30.

After lunch it was off to visit a kangaroo, koala, and other rescue animals, about 30 minutes. Kangaroos and koalas up close enough to touch, and we did. Curious fact, koalas have an incredibly small brain (I’m rethinking nicknames for some acquaintances). Their diet of eucalyptus leaves may have aided in the lack of brain development as there is not much nutrition in a 100% diet of eucalyptus leaves. One benefit to the diet is that is makes their flesh undesirable to predators as it tastes like, you guessed it, eucalyptus.

Back in the bus to go and see Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch, Thirty minutes each. Remarkable Rocks is a monadnock with several granite boulders, split apart on top of it. Pretty impressive. Admiral’s Arch was mainly blocked from view by some kind of improvement project.

Of the 16 or so hours that we were on the tour all but 2 hours and 45 minutes (for visiting attractions and eating lunch), were on a bus or the ferry. A significant time investment, but the animal visit and the Remarkable Rocks were worth it.

Tomorrow, we hop on The Ghan for a 3-day trip to Darwin.
