Blue Lagoon to Vic - Day 2

It is proving more difficult than I thought to get to the blogging. On Thursday (July 31), we got started by 8:30 AM. That was after we picked up our rental at Hertz. We arrived at Vic, our end point for the day by 7:30 PM. Not much computer time left to be witty and informative. Actually, not much time to do either. Did I mention that this time in Iceland that the sun rises about 3:30 AM and sets at about 10:30 PM. It never really gets dark.

The Blue Lagoon, known to the locals as Bláa Loníð, is a famous warm water spa/soaking pool. The effluent water (not affluent but this helps cover the entrance fee of about $30 per person) comes from a discharge from a power plant nearby. Okay for a lesson in generating power in Iceland. All of the electric power comes from hydroelectric or geothermal sources - no fossil fuel.

The Geothermal plant adjacent to the Blue Lagoon draws water from a well 2 km deep. The water is 240°C (or about 470°F). This hot water is the steam that spins the turbines. So, the lagoon is a by produce. The water is warm year round, but it is not as hot as most home hot tubs. The minerals that are carried along with the water as said to cure or at least help many skin disorders. There is a dermatology clinic next door.

A view from the blue water. When we left the average age increased.

One of the must do's is to smear the "mineral goo" on your skin. Doesn't she look better already?

I gave it a try, too. I think the beard prevented success.

Leaving the Blue Lagoon, we encountered our first of many miles on gravel roads. How do you like our Yaris? After about a hundred kilometers on this type of road, I'm glad I opted for the collision damage waiver.

Seljalandsfoss water fall is about 60 meters tall. On the ledge behind the falls, you might see people walking behind the falls. Be sure to bring a rain coat if want to try it.

Skágafoss Waterfall is 62 meters high.

Another view of Skágafoss

A black sand beach at Vic. The fog is rolling in at about 10:30 PM.

About 10:30PM, with a fill flash, it looks like midday.

Today has been mostly a picture post. I'm running a day behind at this writing. We hit the road a 6AM today (it is 11:30 PM on August 1 as I post this entry. We did not get to the hostel this evening until 8PM. I've downloaded about 170 image files for today's photo taking. More tomorrow if I have a connection.
