Day #35 Melbourne

We flew from Hobart to Melbs in about 1 1/2 hours. Then to our Air B&B apartment on the western edge of the CBD (Central Business District). We are in the 21st floor of 44 floors. It's the best of the rentals so far; it is beautiful. I'll have to check to see how much I paid for this one.
We hoofed it to the central tourist info site in the center of the CBD. Melbourne has free trams that run all through the center of town. Once you go beyond the central area you must pay, but it is very reasonable. So far, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have great public transportation.
After spending time with a very knowledgable guy at the info center, we had a plan for the day and beyond. We were going back to the apartment then off to the Melbourne Goal. It is the old prison and adjoining city holding jail. It was called The City Police Watch House. We did an add on tour of the watch house which gave us an in depth look at the method of holding those arrested but not yet arraigned. This old holding cell system was used until 1994. The prison was pretty grim. It was in use from the mid-1800s until 1924. The most famous bushranger/bandit, Ned Kelly, was hanged at the prison. Ned Kelly is Australia's version of Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson all rolled up into one character. Give him a Google.

We headed to the Wednesday night market located in the Queen Victoria Market. On Wednesday nights during the summer, they set up 50+ food vendors offering a huge variety of ethnic options. We enjoyed Nepalese. Filipino, Italian, and American Donuts. American donuts turned out to be smallish jelly donuts - very good.

Finally, we free trammed it back to our place on the 21st floor.
Tomorrow, more Melbourne.
