Day #46 The Ghan
This morning, we Ubered to the Parkland Railway Station to catch The Ghan. The Ghan is a all inclusive 3 day, 2 night journey from Adelaide to Darwin (or Darwin to Adelaide, if you prefer). It cuts through the middle of Australia from the far south to the far north, from the desert to the tropical north. The name comes from the Afghan camel drovers that carried supplies across Australia’s center on camels. There are still feral camels in the Outback. We booked this trip almost a year ago. It seemed so far in the future, but now, it was here. We checked in had a glass of bubbly and then boarded the train.

our compartment |
It is 34 cars and 2 locomotives long. There were 240 passengers and 40 staff. We had a double compartment that converted to a sleeper in the evening. There was a lounge car where just about any libation was possible, and a dining car where multiple choices were offered at each seating.
on the way |
We met folks from around the world and most had a good understanding about the political dynamic in the USA. I won’t divulge the content of the discussions – use your imagination. Then it was dinner with Liam and Mary from Belfast.

Tomorrow, more Ghan.
