We had a low milage (what do you say for kilometers?) day visiting 2 glaciers, Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Each took a small hike to get to the viewing points. It was only about 5 miles total (about 8 kilometers). I think we had a better view of the face of the Fox Glacier, but both were impressive. Unfortunately, they are receding.

After our glacier exploration, we spoke to a ranger at the info center about the receding glaciers. Not much that they can do to impact the melt. ![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLMy5xhfNCRHId6sORQFoK01xo6VJCbjpJ4ADZVvVUbLgx-YODikhsM_mIoAJm4qKupOiwmsso6Y5cguNhOEjs_sRNCRXMlVrGh9XiGxGx5GJHCuRceOzy5O6HGgJo2xIz1d74iIwCkucchqb08HnuzqN-jomrBJVwsHrrS0NgAteSLGVOTqNIyvTsbLg/w400-h266/240221_153207_04907.jpg) |
the town of Franz Josef |
We stopped at the only food store in town and bought the fixins for a BBQ dinner on the grill at our motel (there is a community gas grill available to all). We were the only ones using it. We are nearing the end of our time in New Zealand (just another day and a half). We will be sorry to leave but Australia beckons.
Tomorrow we drive to Greymouth to catch the Trans Alpine train back to Christchurch.
